did you hear the solenoid shoot the arm out and bang against the flywheel?   either it wasnt aligned right or the solenoid was bound in there... could be either.  sucks that happened to a new starter tho.   checked the color of your oil?

 flywheel or flexplate?  i have a flywheel you could borrow (not sure that does you any good cuz it would have to come back out) but not a flexplate.   the catch can won't hurt, i know it made a big difference in my car... a little oil goes a long way in terms of making your intake dirty, mix it up with 200,000 miles of air ...
